Spiritual Gifts

When is the last time you gave some thought to the topic of spiritual gifts? Better yet, when is the last time you gave some thought to YOUR spiritual gifts?

As a baptized believer in Jesus Christ, God has already ordained you by His Spirit with certain gifts that He is calling you to use in His service today.

Just consider the following verses from Scripture:

Romans 12:1, 6

"And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. ...In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well."

1 Corinthians 12:1, 4-7

"Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this. ...There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. 6 God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other."

Ephesians 4:7, 11-13

"[God] has given each one of us a special gift through the generosity of Christ... Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church... Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ. This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God’s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ."

BOTTOM LINE: As soon as we are baptized members of the church we are called to serve the Body of Christ in doing the work of ministry!

(Church is much more than sitting in a pew for the duration of a worship service.)

So, back to my question, "When is the last time you gave some thought to YOUR spiritual gifts?"

You cannot say that you don't have spiritual gifts. According to Christ, if you are a baptized believer then His Spirit has already equipped you with gifts for service.

You cannot say that God is not calling you to use your gifts in the service of His church. According to Ephesians 4:12, all God's people are called to do the work of the church. And yes, that means you too! Romans 12:1 calls this service "reasonable."

So then, I ask you, "What spiritual gifts has God given you? How are you using them in the service of His church right now?"

Right now, our church is going through a nomination process, prayerfully seeking to assign church members to various aspects of ministry according to their spiritual gifts.

If you aren't sure about what your spiritual gifts are, please fill out the spiritual gifts inventory attached below and send it via e-mail to rccsda@gmail.com.

Ultimately, we want "To Give God Glory by Sharing His Love and Making Disciples." That's our mission statement. We hope that this process will help us accomplish our mission. Would you pray for this process?

Better yet, would you pray about the gifts that God has given you and how you might use them to serve His church? If God places a particular burden for service in some aspect of ministry in the church by all means please let us know.

Sometimes we think that we should only do things for the church if someone asks us to do it, but, in my experience, the people who get asked most often are those who have already decided that they are going to use their gifts for God in the service of His church whether someone asks them or not.

May God grant you the joy of knowing that you are using the gifts He has given you in His service! Amen.
